The active queue

I did a tally. Currently I have 2 072 in my queue of figures to which to add the 'finishing touches'. This comprises figures that are <50% to 95% completed; although more of them are at the upper of that range.

No wonder I only seem to progress them a little with each painting session.

Nevertheless, progress is being made (and enjoyment being had). We’ll see how long it takes me to get them all out the other side!

Queue from the western end. Discernible in the foreground are Saxons and Poles from the recent game of Klissow—plus a few more added in—along with Polish-Italian legion uhlans and some Grenz hussars.

Queue from the eastern end. In the foreground are those 1796 French (still waiting for some white!) along with some early French in greatcoats and Oudionot 'grenadiers', also seeking uniform items deviendront blancs.

White has to wait a bit longer though, as red is the colour of the moment. Saxons (at left) and Prussians (right) of the Great Northern War. The latter were my most recent (and last) addition to the current queue.

  1. Impressive! Big collection. Hats off... James, I'm interested in the SOLO game format. Is it possible to briefly share the features of such a game?

    1. Thank you very much Valentine.

I do not have anything 'special' to tell you regarding solo wargaming. I simply play the rules as they are, trying to do my best for each side (and trying not to be biased for my favoured side). In fact, I favoured the Swedes at Fraustadt and managed to lose! :)

Other people have produced various adaptations for solo wargaming.

I strongly recommend Jon's wonderful blog 'Grymauch's Solo Wargaming Blog' (http://grymauch.blogspot.com/). He has lots and lots of reports of inspirational and beautiful games and a page dedicated to discussing solo wargaming: http://grymauch.blogspot.com/p/solo-wargaming.html

Another wonderful blog is Peter's 'Grid based wargaming - but not always' (https://gridbasedwargaming.blogspot.com/). Again, loads and loads of reports of games. Peter also posts files with his rules and scenarios.

There is a website called 'Lone Warrior Website | Official Website of the Solo Wargamers Association'. I have not explored it much, but there is loads and loads of content!

I hope that these are of help?
      Regards, James

  2. James! You have almost 2,100 figures in some state of completion between ‘not started’ and ‘finished’? That is hard to believe. I mean, REALLY hard to believe!

    1. Nice one Jonathan (I have assumed humorous sarcasm). If I include the 'not started' the sum is far greater, of course...!!

(The <50% figures in this paint queue are at very least undercoated, based and with some detail or a major colour done. At the other end are those ready for final touches/highlights.)

    1. I cannot recommend Jon and Peter's blogs too highly.

  4. I have too many figures in various stages of painting, but not quite as many as your good self! Still I really am trying to finish off those projects that are 90% complete so I can move on to other projects.

    1. I agree, there is pleasure in painting (I also get pleasure from planning and 'dreaming' about what I'll paint), but the greatest satisfaction comes from actually finishing something!

  5. Wow James, that is an intimidating number of troops to try and finish. But since you are solo gaming, they all don't really have to be painted, right? 😉

    1. Perhaps not, but they do for me. I cannot quite bring myself to fielding unpainted units, yet. Mind you, I have had simply undercoated figures on the table as part of large games in the past where my hoped for production was far, far below actual! :)

  6. I've factored quality of paint job into the troop quality for my summer campaigns. Veterans are fully painted and varnished, green troops are based and undercoated. You get the picture :-)

  7. Wow - these boxes are looking like a lot of hard work.

  8. Hi James - I have popped into the Chauvinistic Blog a few times this year but always found the same old post - had not thought to check your alternative home! That really is a lot of partially painted figures - I dont know how you psych yourself up to plough through such a pile - I generally paint 3-12 figures at a time and complete them before I move on to the next, until the unit/brigade/division/collection is completed. I dont think I could handle this many "to do" figures!
